008 - Expert Workshop - Working with family narratives - Kurt Tong

In this expert session Kurt will workshop the process of making 'The Queen, The Chairman and I' in which he uncovered family secrets whilst exploring the entwined histories of China, Hong Kong and the UK. Kurt will also discuss 'Combing for Ice and Jade' a multi-layered love letter to his nanny, 87-year old Mak, who worked for his family for nearly 40 years.

The session will include:

  • How to find your way when there is so much material to work with

  • How to have critical distance when you are part of the story

  • Strategies of making personal stories universal when presented in a variety of formats
